Leadership, Culture, and Values

Building the organisation we want to become

Culture is easy to describe once an organisation is established. The exciting opportunity here is helping to create it from the start.

We are still building our permanent organisation, so joining us now means having a genuine opportunity to influence how Sussex & Brighton develops and what it feels like to work here.

How you lead will matter just as much as what you deliver. Through the decisions you make, the relationships you build and the way you work with others, you will help shape the culture of our organisation for the future.

How we want to work

Our current organisational values are:

Setting people first

Understanding the people, communities and organisations affected by our work and keeping them at the heart of how we think and act.

Being open & accountable

Operating with the transparency and accountability expected of a public institution and being clear about the role we play.

Stronger together

Working across organisational and geographic boundaries and recognising that many of Sussex's most important opportunities require collaboration.

Always improving

Remaining willing to learn, adapt and find better ways of working as the Strategic Authority develops.

Leadership here is bigger than a job description

Your professional expertise matters, but what you bring as a leader matters just as much.

We are looking for Chief Officers who can collaborate, build consensus and think beyond organisational and professional boundaries. We want to create a learning organisation that stays curious, continues to innovate and evolves as we grow.

As part of our senior leadership team, you will contribute beyond your own portfolio and help lead the Strategic Authority as a whole.

That means bringing judgement as well as expertise, being comfortable when not everything has been established already, and recognising that the best outcomes often come from bringing different perspectives together.

Building one organisation

Building our culture together.

We are bringing together people and teams with different experiences, backgrounds and organisational histories, and one of our greatest opportunities is to build a shared culture that brings the best of those experiences together.

Our values, behaviours and ways of working are still taking shape, which means those joining us now will have a genuine opportunity to influence the kind of organisation we become. You will help shape that culture not just through the ideas you bring, but through how you lead, the decisions you make, the relationships you build and the teams you create.

A learning organisation

We are building something new, but we are not starting without experience.

As Interim Chief Executive, Mark Rogers is clear that Sussex & Brighton is building on experience rather than starting from scratch. Several members of the team have helped establish strategic authorities before and are bringing those lessons with them. But just as importantly, we want new colleagues to bring their own experience and ideas. What have you learned that could help us build something even better here?

That captures the kind of leadership we want.

People with expertise and experience, but also curiosity. People willing to learn from others. And people who see building the organisation itself as part of the job.
