What will you build here?

Bring everything you’ve learned. Then go further.

Dear Candidate,

Thank you for your interest in Sussex & Brighton Strategic Authority.

Joining SBSA now gives you something rare. A stake in the future of a new organisation, building from strong foundations and shared endeavour.

Several of us have set up strategic authorities before, and we are bringing what we learned to Sussex. We’d love to hear what you have learned too.

The Authority is up and running, with a Prosperity Strategy, support from all three constituent councils and investment already under way. Our permanent leadership, culture and governance are still being formed, and our first Mayor is still to come. You would have a solid platform to build from and real influence over what this organisation becomes. You would then help lead it into its mayoral era.

Each role goes well beyond its professional remit. As Executive Director Finance & Investment (Section 73 Officer), you would hold statutory responsibility while leading our investment strategy. That means turning the Prosperity Strategy into programmes worth investing in and bringing private capital in alongside public money. As Director of Law, Governance & Compliance (Monitoring Officer), you would design governance that ensures good decisions happen. You’d ensure we’re ready for new powers, transport and mayoral leadership, and the model you deliver will give members from all three councils a real role. Others may well follow where you lead. As Director of People & Organisational Development, you would build one Sussex culture while the organisation is small enough to set it deliberately.

You would also join a leadership team where you help make decisions for the whole organisation, alongside colleagues who have done this before.

The place gives that work weight. Gatwick, Manor Royal, quantum research and Brighton & Hove's small businesses sit alongside ports, rural communities and coastal towns such as Hastings, where deprivation is real. Sussex is close to London, but it is not London.

We are lean, so you will build as well as lead. If that appeals, and you value collaboration and sound judgement as much as technical expertise, we’d love to hear from you.

So, what have you learned that Sussex should know?

Kind regards

Mark Rogers

Interim Chief Executive
